Medicare and Home Health Care
Today, a number of services that were once restricted to only hospitals and other care facilities, can now be done in the home. Home care is a more affordable and convenient option for those interested in aging in place.
Medicare pays for certain health services
- If the client meets certain eligibility criteria AND
- If the services are considered necessary for the treatment of illness and/or injury
Home Health Care Services Eligible For Medicare Coverage
Home health agencies approved by Medicare will receive coverage for certain services. Those who have Medicare are eligible for the following coverage (medicare.gov):
- Physical therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Speech therapy
- Skilled nursing care
- Medical social service
- Medical supplies
- Private duty care
This coverage is only available to those that are regularly receiving services under a plan of care by a doctor. To maintain eligibility, other home health professionals must also document that they’ve worked with a patient related to the reason they require home health services.
Home Care Services Not Eligible For Medicare Coverage
Home care services not covered by Medicare include:
- Shopping
- Cleaning
- Meal delivery
- Laundry
- 24/7 at-home daycare services
- Personal care services such as bathing, when that is the only care required
